Indonesian stone types used for carving
Limestone
One of the most common and easily carved Balinese stones is the soft, whiteish stone known as limestone. It is fairly soft and easy to work with allowing artisans to carve intricate details and patterns into the stone.
Greenstone
Greenstone comes from river beds and is a hard , smooth stone. Carvings made from greenstone generally take a long time to complete as it is fairly difficult to carve on.
Brexi
Brexi is a softish sandstone and therefore easy to carve on. Stonecarvings made from brexi usually contain a lot of detail due to the ease of which it can be carved with. Brexi is not suitable for colder climates as frost can cause cracking in the stone. Sandstone (paras)
Paras is a soft, ashy, light gray sometimes yellowish sandstone quarried from the banks of rivers. Its soft nature makes it very easy to carve with and it becomes harder, more durable and darker with time.
Lava
Lava stone is quarried from around Bali's volcanoes. It is a hard stone and can take a lot of time to work with due to its nature. Lava carvings are very durable and tend to resemble antique pieces after a few years of age.
Marble
Marble comes in a huge variety of colors and has been used for centuries by the Balinese in the decoration of palaces and temples. It is currently used more for garden decor such as water fountains.
