A brief history of Balinese stonecarving
The Balinese have for over 2000 years been commissioned to decorate panels, pillars, walls and lintels of temples and palaces. These early carvers often specialized in decorating for religious purposes with carved reliefs drawn from the natural or the mythical world. The occupation of Bali by Dutch colonials in the early 1800’s brought about a change in the perspective of Balinese stone carvers. Artisans began experimenting with pieces influenced by images from early European magazines and movies. Temple panels were decorated with buzzing airplanes, bobbing sailing ships and Dutchmen drinking beer. These new influences, however, did not make the Balinese loose their passion for decorating with the old. Today a huge variety of stone carvings are available. Pieces range from Hindu Gods and fanged, bulging-eyed mythical creatures to naked women and animals. Abstract forms are also becoming increasingly popular and carved in a number of styles.
